Fantasies are the number one thing that help monogamy survive long term according to a psychology professor.

For the survey, extramarital dating site Gleeden polled more than 8,000 of its members.

They found that 31 percent of the site’s female members have had an actual affair with their neighbor.

About 60 percent of these affairs were one night stands.

However, 14 percent of women reported extending them to several weeks, while 6 percent continued it for more than a year. (Here are five reasons why women cheat.)

So, should you be worried about her guy-next-door fantasies?

Not so fast: Most women fantasize about other men, according to Czech research.

That’s because fantasies are a way for her to switch things up sexually while still being faithful to you, explains Wendy Walsh, Ph.D., an adjunct professor of psychology at Cal State.

“Human beings are aroused by novelty and newness,” Walsh says.

“It’s part of our anthropological mission to spread our seed. Sexual fantasies let her create that newness in her head—rather than in her bed.”

In fact, “fantasies are the number one thing that help monogamy survive long term,” Walsh adds.

You should know, because you probably fantasize just as much (if not more) than she does: 71 percent of guys in the Gleeden survey admit to dreaming about a sensual moment with their neighbor.

Plus, according to a study from the University of Vermont, 98 percent of guys imagine having sex with someone besides their partner.

Bottom line: Just because a person might be thinking about having sex with someone else, doesn’t mean they’re going to act on it.
