The convicted rapper who refused to take a retrospective look at BET Awards’ “Best International Act: Africa” category records since its inclusion in the awards scheme in 2010 goofed while congratulating Stonebwoy; a nominee at this year’s edition. He claims Stonebwoy is the first Dancehall act to be nominated at the BET Awards.
On seeing this, Pulse.com.gh took a critical look at his claims to find out the truth. Going through the BET Awards' “Best International Act: Africa” category nominations lists between 2010-2015, we came across Radio & Weasel, a Ugandan music duo who were nominated in the 2013 edition.
We contacted two Ugandan entertainment industry workers: George Ssemanda, who happens to be one of multiple KORA Awards winner, Juliana Kanyomozi's personal assistants and Nettron, a rapper to find out about the genre Radio & Weasel perform.
According to them, Radio & Weasel perform Ragga/Dancehall, R&B and Afro-Pop which makes them rather the first act to be nominated for the best African act category, thus Mad Time Entertainment label founder actually goofed. Give what belongs to Cesar to Cesar!
Founders of the Goodbye Crew, Radio & Weasel are a Reggae/Dancehall-R&B infused duo who hail from Kampala, Uganda. The two have released a number of hits during their five-plus year career, taking them to the top of Uganda's music scene. They were nominated in the "Best International Act: Africa" category alongside Ghana's R2bees at the 2013 BET Awards
According to Ghana's records at BET, music Maestro and GHAMRO chairman, Kojo Antwi was the first to be nominated for BET Awards when the “Best International Act: Africa" category was introduced in 2010 followed by D-Black in 2011. Sarkodie was nominated in 2012 in the same category and he won, R2Bees was nominated in 2013, Sarkodie was nominated again in 2014 and this year Sarkodie has his third nomination in that same category with first timer Stonebowy.
