90 miners arrested in anti-galamsey fight - Taskforce

The “Operation Vanguard” team has arrested 90 illegal miners, the commanding officer of the special anti-galamsey taskforce has disclosed.

Colonel William Agyapong said they were arrested in the Eastern, Ashanti and Western Regions where the taskforce had been deployed.

He told Accra-based Citi FM that the suspects have bee arraigned before the 14 illegal mining (galamsey) courts.

“We have arrested as many as 90 suspected illegal miners. In Eastern Region, we arrested 29, Western Region, 58 and in Ashanti Region we have arrested 3,” he said.

“These are suspects and as I speak they have been sent to the various courts where appropriate prosecution procedures are being followed,” he added.

In addition, Col. Agyapong said the taskforce seized some equipment used by the galamseyers, saying some of it have been destroyed.
