King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz died early on Friday, January 23, according to a statement from the Royal court.

No exact cause of death was cited but the king had been hospitalized for a lung infection on December 31.
Abdullah’s brother, 79-year-old Crown Prince Salman has confirmed the king’s passing in a televised passing and also announced that he had ascended the throne.

King Abdullah was named crown prince, in 1982 and ascended the throne in 2005 after the death of his half-brother, King Fahd.
