Calm has returned to Bunkpurugu district in the Northern Region after nine years of protracted chieftaincy dispute which has claimed the lives of several residents.

Following a peace agreement reached upon by the two factions in the dispute - the Jamong and the Jafouk families, residents who fled to neighbouring Togo, have began returning to the town.

The Paramount Chief of Bunkpurugu, Naa Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong has urged teachers and other health workers who left the town to return.

“They shouldn’t fear anything, they shouldn’t doubt anything. They should come back and continue their job. We are one people and there is nothing wrong again,” Naa Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong told Accra-based Joy FM.

The Jamong family had been claiming title to the Bunkpurugu skin, which is with the Jafok family.

The chieftaincy dispute between the two families, in spite of it being in court for eight years did not stop the factions from going at each other from time to time.

This had a toll on economic and other religious activities in the town, with government being forced to impose a 10pm to 4am curfew in the town amidst heavy security presence.

But with the new peace deal reached between the two families, life in the town is returning to normalcy, as residents are going about their everyday activites.
