Ghana's 2018 budget statement translated into 7 local languages

The local languages are Ga, Ga-Dangbe, Nzema, Dagbani, Asante Twi, Ewe and Gonja.

Head of Public Relations at the Ministry of Finance, Madam Cecilia Isabella Akwetey disclosed this at the Annual Post Budget Sensitisation Workshop for members of the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) and Parliamentary Press Corps in Accra on Monday.

According to her, the Ministry had been collaborating with the Information Services Department, the Ghana Education Service and other institutions at the district level to distribute the translated budget copies and also explain the content of the budget to Ghanaians.

The workshop, organised by the Ministry of Finance, is aimed at enhancing the knowledge and understanding of journalists on the 2018 budget to ensure effective communication and dissemination of accurate information to the public.

Madam Eva Mends, the First Female Director of Budget of the Ministry of Finance, said the budget contains the key policies and programmes of the budget.

She, however, said those initiatives outlined in the budget would not achieve the impact they deserve if they were communicated effectively with the people.

“Part of getting a good budget implemented is to get the right energy and support from the people and we believe that the media is best placed to communicate the message to the people,” she said.

The government on Wednesday presented its second budget to the House of Parliament.

The 2018 'Adwuma' budget (budget for job creation) is the second for the Akufo-Addo administration since it took over the administration of the country this year.

The budget focused on areas including job creation, infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, agriculture, entrepreneurship, business growth, creating a Ghana beyond aid, debt management, corruption, public sector reforms among others, and a continuation of the 2017 budget initiatives.

It also touched mainly on tax reforms, by hoping to bring in many people in the informal sector into the tax net.
