Commercial drivers to strike come Monday

The drivers are embarking on a second strike action in protest of what they describe as unreasonable and unbearable increment in insurance fees after their first agitation yielded not satisfactory results.

Committed Drivers Association of Ghana, an a group of commercial drivers, have given a notice to members of the general public of a planned sit-down strike on Monday.

The association embarked on the first strike when the Ghana Insurers Association increased premiums by 600 per cent some months ago, leaving a number of commuters in the capital stranded.

The Ghana Insurers Association on June 8th, 2015 announced it had reviewed the price for third party insurance tariffs.

Under the new policy, car owners can buy insurance on a short term basis at a cost of 1cedi 30 pesewas daily, monthly or annually.

The new development was the first time in five years premiums for motor insurance premium had been reviewed and increased.

General Secretary of the Committed Drivers Association, Richmond Kwaku Adjei , in a press conference, warned that commercial vehicles will not be allowed to move on Monday.

“We are going to have a sit down strike on 31st of this month and we want all our brothers from the North to the South, East and West to note that on that day, no car should come out. We are sitting down for one week if nothing is being done on the insurance issue.” -
