The Public Utility Workers Union has challenged assertions by the African Centre for Energy Policy that ‘inefficient’ workers be sacked.

According to  General Secretary of PUWU, Michael Adumattah Nyantakyi, ACEP’s  assertion is not only misplaced but must be disregarded by government.

“I don’t know how ACEP takes and determines who is fit and who is not fit. Even within ECG system, anybody who fails to meet the requisite requirement. If you go contrary to laid down procedures and the law catches with you, you are dealt with. So it is not like nobody is sacked or dismissed from the company for the wrong reason”, Mr. Nyantakyi said.

ACEP argues that only staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana who are deserving should be retained in the privatisation process due to the poor customer service delivered by the current staff of the company.

Mr. Nyantakyi added that  “I do not get the point being pushed by ACEP because if people are not meeting their expected target, or if people do things that are contrary to the rules and regulations and they are found out, they are disciplined according to laid down procedures,” he added.

According to ACEP government must tackle the issue of staff inefficiency as part of the privatisation process of ECG, even as the issue of job security of workers are being addressed.

The Public Utility Workers Union has been agitating against the release of the Electricity Company of Ghana to a concessionaire on grounds that they may lose their jobs.

While ACEP believes it is important for government to secure the jobs of ECG staff, they believe not all workers must be retained.
