I want to grow Ghana’s economy for Ghanaians – Ken Ofori Atta

The Minister of Finance Ken Ofori Atta said even though he has a dream of growing Ghana’s economy "I don't want to wake up at 5 am and come and sit in the Ministry and grow this economy for Foreigners. That is not to say we won't allow foreigners, we will create an enabling environment for them.”

He was speaking at the National Policy Summit 2017 held at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Monday (May 15, 2017).

He said even though he has a dream of growing Ghana’s economy  "I don't want to wake up at 5 am and come and sit in the Ministry and grow this economy for Foreigners. That is not to say we won't allow foreigners, we will create an enabling environment for them.”

“So in 4yrs if our GDP has grown ten times what it is today, I want to be able to say Ghanaians are driving the major productive sectors of this economy like we see in Asia and co,” he added.

Many Ghanaians have often argued that even though successive governments claim the economy is growing, they do not feel the growth as Ghanaians.

Most Ghanaians believe that it is foreigners who live in Ghana or do business in the country who are the major drivers of the economy.

In elections years, successive governments have overspent and this has resulted in budget deficits.

Ken Ofori-Atta assured the general public the Nana Addo-led government will ensure it doesn’t spend out of its budget in the election year.

“We will also reduce the margin of exploitation during election periods so we do not go back to start again.”
