Stanbic Bank affirms its support for vocational and entrepreneurial skills development

The lack of resources and technical know-how, unavailability of required technologies, and an increase in population without a corresponding increase in jobs have been identified as major causes of youth unemployment.

The situation is even more intensified as rural-urban migration soars.

According to the Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative Employment (YIEDIE), Ghana has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world with 30 per cent unemployed youth in its capital city, Accra.

The World Bank in its latest report on jobs in Ghana, dubbed the “Landscape of Jobs in Ghana,” which explores the opportunities for youth inclusion in Ghana’s labour market, also revealed about 48 per cent of the youth in the country, who are between 15 to 24 years do not have jobs.

The Nneka Foundation is a non-profit entity at Ve-Agbome in the Afadjato South District in the Volta Region, committed to youth empowerment.

Since 2012, the Nneka Youth Foundation has taken giant strides in changing the lives and mindsets of the youth in the Volta Region and parts of the Greater Accra Region.

The Foundation uses skill and talent development to resolve challenges among the youth in rural areas such as teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, gambling, high rate of school dropout and unemployment.

Samuel Teye, the Head of Human Capital at Stanbic Bank, said the Bank’s decision to support the Foundation is in line with Stanbic’s commitment toward youth development.

“It is such a joy to be part of the lives of these children who by no fault of theirs do not have access to quality education, career guidance, mentoring and other resources,” Teye said. “It is the desire of Stanbic to be part of the success stories of these children, their families and local communities.”

He lauded the Foundation for the significant impact it is making in the broader scheme of youth development in the country.

Some of the artistry produced by the beneficiaries of the Nneka Foundation include beads, batik paintings, bathroom slippers, cassava flour and branded wrist bands. The beneficiaries are taken through these enterprising fields by experts and professionals from various disciplines.

Staff members of Stanbic Bank spent a day mentoring and providing career guidance for the children. The Bank also donated a cheque of GHS 15,000, 1000 copies of exercise books, pens and bags of clothes to support the cause.

Receiving the items, Cecelia Fiaka, Founder of the Nneka Youth Foundation, expressed appreciation and appealed to other corporate bodies to follow the footpath of Stanbic Bank and come to their aid.

“The over-arching situation that is causing the youth to drop out of school is poverty. If we succeed in equipping them in the right enterprise and teaching them how to brand and market what they produce, the children will be well resourced to take care of themselves and make the community a better one.” Mrs Fiaka said.

Stanbic Bank over the years has been committed to creating prosperity by providing critical social support in education, sports development, agriculture, poverty relief, health and environmental protection.
