The decision by the Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) to sack 13 workers and suspended additional 32 has generated a furious debate between it and the General Transport and Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU).

While GTPCWU believes the decision by the management is “an attack on trade unionism,” according to the General Secretary of Union, Samuel Boateng, spokesman for Ghana Gas, Alfred Ogbamey  says “due processes were followed in the dismissal.”

Ghana Gas took a sweeping decision to punished workers who embarked on a demonstration it says was “illegal.” It took the decision after a disciplinary action was initiated against the workers who participated in the demonstration.

The workers three months ago took to the streets to protest against “unfavourable” working conditions including poor safety measures at the Gas processing company.

Head of Corporate communications at Ghana Gas, Alfred Ogbamey justified the decision of management, saying the workers went against all counsel to back down on the protest.

“The workers violated the company act,” he told Joy FM Monday. They “went against all advice.”

But Mr Boateng challenged Ogbamey, revealing that a meeting at the behest of the Minister of Labour, Haruna Iddrisu, concluded that the errant workers should not be dismissed. He added that the Chief Executive of Ghana Gas assured that there was not going to be any dismissals.

Ogbamey said it was only an advice and not an agreement, arguing that Ghana Gas is a limited liability company which is not subject to the dictate of the minister or any government agency.

“There was an advice not an agreement that workers should not be sacked,” he said.

The workers have petitioned against their dismissal and are said to have engaged influential people to lobby on their behalf.

But Ogbamey believes the mitigation measures by the punished workers is an admission of guilt.

The demonstration, embarked three months ago, according to Obgamey was illegal but said the workers were not dismissed because of the demonstration. He said they were sacked for “proven misconduct” in a separate interview on Citi FM.

Citing an example, he said the workers in multiple media interview said they had not been paid for three months which according to him was “a lie.”

Asked if the decision could be reversed, Obgamey said the board will sit to listen to the various appeals launched and the outcome will be made known after the meeting.
