GAWU boss chides Akufo Addo over '1-village-1-dam policy'

Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party presidential nominee, has pledged to build dams in faming villages in the three northern region if he is elected president in the December vote.

The dam, he says, is to ensure all-year rounding farming in a bid to get more youth into farming and enough food stock.

But Edward Karaweh said in an interview with Accra-based 3FM that the promise is a sign of underdevelopment.

He said: "It’s a sign of underdevelopment. I do not see that as the way to go with agriculture development in this country.

"If you promise every man, one motor bike, there will be chaos. If you promise every man, one car, it will create chaos. There will be chaos in agriculture."

“You see, what type of agriculture are you talking about? Are you saying everybody must be in agriculture? No, you are simply saying that if you are born in a particular village, because you have put the one dam there, you remain there and it will not be long, you will realize that that is not the aspirations of people”, he said.

“Of course people must have access to agriculture; the solution is not one village one dam. The solution is making water available.”

The '1-village-1-dam' promise has also come under criticism from the governing National Democratic Congress.

According to the Deputy General Secretary of the party, Mr. Koku Anyidoho, the promise is not feasible.
