Lufthansa Public relations manager for sub Saharan Africa, Jimo Hakeem has however stated that the airline has put in place measures to alleviate the plight of affected businesses and individuals.

Some local businesses have started feeling the impact of the strike action by pilots of Lufthansa. The German Airline yesterday cancelled flights to Ghana and other countries as a result of the strike. The pilot union has been in a long running dispute over pay retirements and cost cuts.

‘When this happens, there is automatic booking. Passengers will be booked on other flights which are available. If not, for those who are already in transit, they will be put in a hotel...Right now I don’t know have any information as to how long the strike will take; whether today, and whether operation will start tomorrow, and I’m also expecting more information because this is a unilateral decision by the union’, he said on Accra-based Starr FM.

Union and management have been embroiled in a bitter dispute since April 2014 over management plans to change the pilots' early retirement arrangements.The dispute hinges on plans by Lufthansa to scrap an arrangement under which pilots can retire at 55 and receive up to 60 percent of their pay until they reach the statutory retirement age of 65.Pilots are also concerned about Lufthansa's aim to further develop its low-cost activities as it faces growing competition.
