The Yemen branch of Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the January 7 terrorist attack on the Paris office of satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

Nasr al-Ansi, a senior commander of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) stated in an 11-minute video posted online on Wednesday, January 14, that the attack was carried out in "vengeance for the prophet."

Charlie Hebdo has become notorious for its anti- Prophet Mohammed cartoons which led to its office being firebombed in 2011.

Al-Ansi stated that Yemen's al Qaeda branch "chose the target, laid out the plan and financed the operation” while warning of more “tragedies and terror”.

“Congratulations to you for these brave men who blew off the dust of disgrace and lit the torch of glory in the darkness of defeat and agony,” he said.

The attack was carried out by gunmen, Said and Cherif Kouachi who were reportedly heard saying “We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad!” and “Tell them this was Al Qaeda in Yemen” while fleeing the scene of the massacre.
