One dies after clashes between Police and indigenes of Bunkpurugu

Confirming the incident to Pulse.com.gh, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah said the clashes occurred on Thursday around 7 pm after two men who were seated nearer to the police station were attacked by some unknown persons, sustaining gunshot wounds in the process.

"After that the people started burning houses later in the night and they started firing here and there wanting to attack the police. And so the police also returned fire to prevent themselves," the Police Commander added.

He said no arrest has been made so far.

DCOP Ken Yeboah further suspects that the incident happened after a press conference in Accra which accused the police of being bias in their handling of the clashes in the area.

He however suspects that the Jamong family is behind the recent clashes.

The Jamong family is claiming title to the Bunkpurugu skin, which is with the Jafog family.

The chieftaincy dispute between the two families has been in court for eight years but that has not stopped the factions from going at each other from time to time.

Numerous deaths have been recorded between Jamong and Jafog clans in the Bunkprugu traditional area.

There are have also been attempts for peaceful co-existence between the two clans.

On the way forward, DCOP Ken Yeboah urged the two families to be patient and wait for the outcome of the court ruling.

"The regional House of Chiefs should come out with the ruling as to who is the rightful person to be the chief of the place...The people should also realise that there are lot of processes. You have taken the case to court, why won't you wait for the outcome but rather resorting to arms here and there, killing people here and there, destroying properties here and there," he added.

Police have however launched investigations into the recent clashes.
