Confusion Ensues As Workers Accuse Accounts Officer Of Corruption

The workers at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) are calling for the removal of the Chief Accounts Officer Kenneth Agbezuhlor for various corrupt acts and abuse of office.

The workers have also written to the Controller and Accountant General demanding the chief accountant’s recall or they will demonstrate to express their displeasure.

Speaking on Joy FM Top Story President of the CHRAJ Staff Association, Michael Nkansah said their challenges with the accountant started about four years ago.

He claimed Kenneth Agbezuhlor has constantly assaulted them verbally, he said  he once insulted a lady that “a dog is even better than her” amongst other verbal abuses, Mr. Nkansah  stated.

The accountant has “not demonstrated that he wants to work in a human rights institution,” after management has been informed about his attitude through resolutions but “we have not seen anything in change of behavior” he said.

Information gathered that because of his position as the chief accountant at CHRAJ, he has access to the GIFMIS system but does not have full control over its use as the workers asserted.

It was learnt that government has not released any subvention to CHRAJ since the beginning of the year. The last time any payments were made to the Regional offices was in March courtesy funding from DANIDA and UNDP for their project activities. The monies cannot be used to pay for piled up over-time allowances, transport and medical bills. This is in sharp contrast to claims by the workers that the Commission has money which is being shared among the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners.

Currently, there is an audit into the disbursement of DANIDA funds given to the has rejected that he misused  funds in the commissioner’s accommodation saga. The CHRAJ commissioner, Lauretta Lamptey, has been widely criticized for wasting taxpayer’s money on hotel bills  after she relocated from a rented residence at the AU Village.

This was during the renovation of her official residence as CHRAJ boss, while she lodged at a $450 a night hotel in Accra.

“In a set up like this, it is not my duty to explain to staff what is happening, it is management’s responsibility. Since the commissioner came, we have attended management meeting only once. I cannot call a management meeting; it is not my duty.

“So if there is an issue that the staff are supposed to be informed about that is not my responsibility, I work and report to management,” Kenneth Agbezuhlor said.

He added: “I have never paid the hotel bill of the commissioner. No bill concerning the commissioner’s hotel accommodation has been forwarded to my desk".
