Car stealing syndicate arrested in Tarkwa

The suspects are Godfrey Kwakye, 42, Samuel Nana Kwakye, 38, Mahmud Abdulai, alias Baba Kankani, 38, and Joseph Osei, 36.

They were arrested at Tarkwa while offering for sale a Toyota Corolla vehicle they had stolen from a car rental company in Accra.

The police said they had changed the number plate of the car and pasted “for sale” sticker on it with a telephone number directing potential buyers.

They also allegedly had fake documentation to the vehicle.

The suspects, who are currently in police cells, hired the car from Errands Car Rentals but failed to retain it at the end of the contract.

They attempted to sell the vehicle with registration number GW 1824-16 when they were arrested upon a tipoff.

The police said the driver of the car, Baba Kankani, was arrested in front of the Ecobank branch in Tarkwa and the other three suspects were picked up at a hotel they were lodging.

The Tarkwa Circuit court remanded them into prison custody after their pleas were not taken and they would re-appear in court on Friday June 2.

This was after the Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Madam Juliana Essel-Dadzie pleaded with the trial judge, Mr Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew to remand the suspects to enable the police investigate the matter properly.
