Looking Past Your Mountain Of Past Pain

The thing about the mountain of your past is that the farther you get from it, the smaller it gets. Let God’s grace help you put some distance between you and that mountain.

We all have a past. Some of us, very few of us, have a pleasant, benign string of years behind us that never scarred, wounded, blighted or marred our physical or emotional self. The rest of us have lives at least dotted with hurts and setbacks. They help create who we are – good or bad.

I’ve known people who drag around the mountain of their past pain, not sure how to lose it or not even sure if they should. Guilt is a powerful chain that keeps us tethered to our past, making it impossible to move forward. Shame is another thick cable that holds us to a past we would give anything to forget.

Then there are those people who won’t let you dump that mountain no matter how hard you try or how much you prove you have changed. With their words, they cinch the chain tighter and tighter until you feel it will choke you.

There are some important things to remember the next time you look back and see your mountain has not moved.

• God is the mover of mountains. - No matter how big, no matter how old.

• Guilt and shame are not the methods God uses to convict us. - He will never hold our past in our face.

• Man is a fickle animal. - When we place too much importance on what man thinks, we will never find liberation from the mountain that is constantly thrown in our path.

The thing about the mountain of your past is that the farther you get from it, the smaller it gets. Let God’s grace help you put some distance between you and that mountain. You may always see the tip of it far off on the horizon, but it can’t hurt you there. It will just remind you how far you have come.
