The Kumasi Central market project has been hit with agitations by the traders who are accusing the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) of failing to find a suitable venue to relocate them.

President John Mahama has indicated that government is determined to go ahead with the reconstruction of the Kumasi Central market despite the persistent agitations by traders.

“We are determined to go ahead with the construction of the new modern Kumasi Central Market. Kumasi market is historical and if you read history books, you will find references to the Kumasi market. People came from all across West Africa to come and trade in the Kumasi market.

The current design we have will make the Kumasi market the most modern and beautiful market in West Africa,” the President made the remarks in Kumasi when he commissioned the newly constructed Rattray recreational park on Saturday.

But President Mahama believes the concerns by the traders could be addressed by the stakeholders if they work together.

“I wish to appeal to Otumfour and the traditional leaders of Kumasi and the opinion leaders to intervene so that we can phase the market for the project to begin as soon as possible."I know that there are various issues that keep getting raised but I believe that they can be resolved by the stakeholders,” he said.
