Africa deserves a seat on the UN Security Council – Kwesi Pratt

The UN Security Council has five permanent members including China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The managing editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr has admonished Africans to join forces and demand a seat on the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

Speaking on Radio Gold on Saturday, Kwesi Pratt Jr remarked that this is an issue which has been raised several times on various platforms with the latest being President John Mahama at the UN General Assembly meeting last week.

He accused the UN of being an “undemocratic institution” which supervises discrimination and unequal treatment among member states.

“The UN itself is a flawed institution. It is very undemocratic,” he said.

However, there are 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.

He said: “Truth be told it is long past time. The world that was in 1925 does not exist in 2015. So the visionary organisation that was formed to meet the needs of that world must now be reformed to meet the needs of today’s world.”

Kwesi Pratt Jr added that “this is an issue that all of us as Africans should rally around. Look at the countries that have veto powers on the UN Security Council, look at those countries that decide which country should be attacked and which country should not be attacked…Africa deserves a seat on the UN Security Council as indicated by President John Mahama in his address.”
