Asantehene asks gov't to allow universities & others to employ

He stated that if government reviews the policy, it will prevent the plan by some universities to cut down their intake due to inadequate staff.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu the II, is appealing to government to review its policy on recruitment and particularly grant the universities and other higher educational institutions a special dispensation to enable them fill vacancies in their establishments.

Speaking at the 49th congregation ceremony of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfour said the government's current freeze on employment makes it difficult for universities to recruit new or replace retired staff. He stated that if government reviews the policy, it will prevent the plan by some universities to cut down their intake due to inadequate staff.

“Leaders of universities acknowledge the devastating impact of the paucity of staff on the goals of their institutions and are doing everything possible to improve the situation. However, the government policy on recruitment, in recent times, makes it difficult for universities to recruit new staff; and or replace retired staff and those who have passed on.

“I therefore, add my voice to the call of the Vice Chancellors Ghana and other stakeholders and appeal to the Government to seriously consider the impact of the policy on recruitment in the country and grant the universities and other higher educational institutions a special dispensation to enable them fill the gaps of their academic staff”, Asantehene appealed.
