It is unclear what caused the explosion at the Ghonco Chinese company located on the Sekondi road.

The reports suggest that personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were working on solving a fault on a tanker which was discharging gas close to the Total filling station on the main Takoradi Highway.

Nana Addo in a tweet to console the victims said he was "very sad and sorry to hear about the gas explosion in Takoradi" yesterday.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the injured and families affected," he added.
