Ghana's prison is over populated by 3,810 inmates, the Ghana Prisons Service has said.

The country's 43 prisons were designed to accommodate 9,875 prisoners but currently holds 13,685 prisoners.

Of the total, 189 are females and 137 are on death row include 3 females, the acting Director General of the Ghana Prison Service, Mr Emmanuel Adzator, has said the launch of the 10th anniversary of the Prison Ladies Association Service (PRILAS) in Accra.
The one-week celebration is on the theme: “Celebrating a proud past: empowering the female prison officer for excellence”.
The convicts are mostly in the youth bracket, Mr Adzator said.
“The situation required of us to provide opportunities for the self-enhancement of the able bodied men and women in custody,” he said.
