Deputy Director in charge of rural fires, Mr. Kwesi Quayson speaking on behalf of Chief Fire Officer, Dr. Albert Brown Gaisie, noted that this reduction was made possible by fire education intensification.

Speaking at the Ghana National Fire Service Head Quarters in Accra on Tuesday, 3rd January, he commented that, despite many challenges the personnel face, they have ensured that fires are prevented in the country.

According to Mr. Quayson, the Ghana National Fire Service has established 32 fire service stations across the country in 2016, thereby helping to improve e their response to emergencies.

He was, therefore, optimistic projecting into 2017, targeting the year to be brighter with each other’s encouragement.

Meanwhile, the chief director of the ministry of the interior, Mrs. Adelaide Annor Kumi, speaking on behalf of the minister of the interior, Mr. Prosper Bani, at the program, commented that the ministry is particularly happy with the 60percent fire outbreak dropped in the last quarter of 2016 as compared to the same period in 2015.

“It is my hope that the command and personnel of the service would consolidate and build on the achievements of 2016 for the service, the general public and the country at large”, she applauded.

Mrs. Annor-Kumi emphasized on the fact that 2016 has been a year of difficulty in terms of finances for all the agencies under the ministry but was grateful the Ghana National Fire Service was able to “operate within its limited resources.” She commended.

She said the ministry was appreciative of the tireless efforts of the service personnel throughout the year, admiring the “skills and dexterity” with which they handled the recent gas explosion incident near the Accra International Trade Fair in Accra, the Kumasi Central market, and the Vienna City fire incidents in collaboration with other security services.

On his part, former Minister of state and the chairman of the council, Mr. Ken Dzirasah appreciated the fact that response to fire time has improved tremendously due to home fire safety programs being held frequently.

However, he cautioned, that the public must communicate any incidence of fire outbreak immediately to the service to avoid further distractions.

The program was climaxed with some presentation of awards to regional units that had excelled in their administrations.

The upper west region won the Most innovative region, Ashanti Region won the best safety fire outreach in campaign programs whiles the Greater Accra took the most operational and responsive.
