The commercial bus driver who hit and killed a woman and her two grandchildren at Teshie, Accra, has been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command.

The suspect, Patrick Laryea, 35, was arrested upon a tip-off by one of the passengers on the vehicle.

The commercial bus involved in the hit and run incident was believed to be carrying passengers. The children and their grandmother were returning from their grandfather’s funeral at Kodeabe when they were hit and killed by the bus on the evening of Saturday December 12.

The Police had launched a manhunt for the driver and his conductor after they escaped the scene of the crime.

Following the arrest of the driver on Sunday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, COP Dampare, has told the bereaved family that he would do all it can to set the case for court as soon as possible.

He added that the public must be cautious of the road especially during the yuletide season.

“Christmas is just around the corner and in the course of this festive period over the years, we’ve had incidents of avoidable accidents leading to loss of precious lives. We want to take this opportunity to advise all and sundry to exercise restraint during this festive period,” he advised.

“I also would like to urge passengers who happen to be in vehicles, especially commercial vehicles that any point in time if any driver is driving in a way that you are not safe, please be bold and talk for that person to act responsibly,” he added.

The deceased have been identified as 75-year-old Adwoa Ode, 10 year old Owusu Sekyere and 8 year old Jacklyne Owusu Sekyere.
