Otuam Community SHS to be named after late Atta Mills

The newly constructed community Senior High School at Ekumfi Otuam in the Central Region would be named after the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Deputy Minister of Local Government ad Rural Development, Nii Lamptey Vanderpuye has disclosed.

The school, expected to be commissioned and handed over to the Government before the beginning of the next academic year, would be called “Atta Mills Memorial Senior High School (SHS)”.

This was made known on Friday when the Minister paid a courtesy call on the chiefs of Ekumfi, as part of activities aimed at conscientizing the people of the Region on the ninth edition of the National Sanitation Day Exercise on Saturday August 1.

The decision to name the school after the late President, according to the Minister, was part of efforts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to duly honor the immense contribution of the late president to improve the quality of education in the country.

He described the Late President Mills as a true statesman and one who served his country with dignity, and that, it was important for his name to be protected and in the history books of the country forever.

Mr. Vanderpuye expressed worry that some residents of Ekumfi, often made unreasonable demands from the Government and followed up with bad utterances and demonstrations whenever their demands were not met.

He asked them to desist from such acts, as it does not auger well for the development of the area, adding that “it is also a disgrace to the people of Ekumfi to disrespect the name of the late President.”

The Acting president of the Ekumfiman Traditional Council, Nana Edna XIII and other chiefs, expressed their appreciation to the Minister and pledged their support to the Ministry of Local Government to ensure that the Sanitation Day exercise was successful.

He appealed to the Government to ensure that the boundary between Ekumfi and Mfantseman districts was properly demarcated to prevent any boundary disputes to enable the district to get its needed revenue.
