Social messaging sites blocked amidst anti-3rd term presidency protests

Social media messaging services have been used to coordinate the protests which are the biggest in Burundi since the civil war ended in 2005.

In the wake of the protests in Burundi over President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to run for  a 3rd term, messaging services such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter and Tango have been cut off in the country.

BBC quoting AFP reports that the regulator ordered telecoms operators to block mobile access to certain sites.

Social media messaging services have been used to coordinate the protests which are the biggest in Burundi since the civil war ended in 2005.

Earlier on, the government had banned protests, deployed the army and shut down the main independent radio station, alleging that the radio station was disturbing the peace.

Inspite of these moves, people have continued to troop out to protest as the protests enters its 4th day.

Nkurunziza, who seeks a 3rd term has been in power since 2005, when a 12-year civil war officially ended and has warned that anyone who wants to create problems for the governing party would find himself "in trouble".
