Meet the man responsible for Lawyer Sosu's downfall

Francis Agyare's accusation of illegal charges lands his lawyer in a 3-year ban.

The ban was given by the General Legal Council (GLC) of the Ghana Bar Association after he was found guilty of charges of touting and illegal profiteering.

At the back of these sanctions is a complaint filed by former client of Lawyer Sosu, Francis Agyare who accused him of excessive charges for services rendered for a supposedly pro bono case.

Francis Agyare was arrested in a swoop together with some 56 others in James Town on January 5, 1994 in James Town and was kept on remand at the Nsawam prisons for 14 years without trial.

His then lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu, argued on ‘‘breach of his fundamental human rights’’ on behalf of his client for which GH¢200,000 in damages was awarded.

However contrary to the pro bono status of the case, Francis Agyare agreed to pay with consent Gh Cedis 50,000, an amount for which after three years he has sued his lawyer for over- estimation of the services rendered to him.

Unfortunately for Lawyer Sosu, that one ethical discrepancy was the gateway to uncovering several other issues where he breached the law.

First, he failed to appear before the disciplinary committee of the Council on 9th June, 2016 after being given a formal notice.

Thereafter, the General Legal Council charged Lawyer Sosu  with the motive of personal advertisement and touting for two other cases; that of Torgbui Afede XIV and Patrick Reynolds Yeboah, the young man whose accident of being struck by a billboard went viral on social media.

Considering all these charges, the Council also reached a decision to ban the lawyer for three years for advertising himself on social media.

After that sentence, he is to be mentored by a senior for a period of one year commencing 2nd June, 2020 and ending on 1st June, 2021.
