Communications Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has said the uproar that greeted the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) directives on the party’s parliamentary primaries shows it lacks effective leadership.

This, according to him, is because the leadership of the NPP failed on several occasions to call senior members of the party who make unhealthy statements to order thus allowing the culture of rebellion to grow.

The leadership of the NPP last week proposed that only women can contest sitting female members of Parliament while only indigenous Gas should contest certain seats in the Greater Accra region.

This has been widely condemned by supporters of the party. Speaking at a meeting of the Legon Branch of the Tertiary education institutions Network (TEIN), the communications minister insisted that the largest opposition party does not have what it takes to make the right decisions hence his position.

He argued that “that is what happens when there is no effective leadership in a political party. If Nana Addo had cautioned Osafo Marfo, he had Kennedy Agyepong, if he had cautioned the rest who were saying that some people should have been chasing cattles and all that but for Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s education trust that they provided, if he had cautioned them they wouldn’t have gotten themselves into this kind of situation.”

For his part, Deputy Education Minister Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa described as unprincipled and discriminatory the NPP’s affirmative action directives.

“Look at how the NPP under Nana Akufo Addo has been in total disarray, because of an ill thought poorly conceived divisive ebola decision. You have a situation where now you have been seen for who you are and you engage in this unprincipled tokenism, the Gas clearly are not impressed, the women are not impressed. If you say that Ga coastal communities must all go to Gas what business does Ursula Owusu have still contesting Ablekuma West.”
