IGP orders arrest and prosecution of persons engaged in vandalism following announcement of MMDCEs

President Nana Akufo-Addo's nominees were met with resistance and violent protest, leading to the destruction of properties in some few districts and municipalities.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the IGP said the police is not against people voicing rejection for the president's appointments but said it must be done through peaceful and lawful means.

He hailed groups who held press conferences and peaceful demonstrations to drum home their displeasure about the president's appointments.

The IGP commended personnel of the Ghana Police Service in the affected areas for the swift manner in which they dealt with the disturbances, Daily Graphic reported.

The IGP said the Police Administration was solidly behind the personnel and urged them to continue to discharge their duties with professionalism, according to the report.

Despite the pocket of resistance, the IGP said the nominees were generally received.

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development has also said on multiple media platforms that the president's appointments have been generally received.

According to her, they excepted some resistance in some of the districts and municipalities.

“Some incidents of resistance and agitation by residents in a few districts and municipalities against some of the appointees were expected,” Hajia Alima Mahama said.
