Boat capsize kills at least 1 and five others missing

Thirteen people were on the boat, which sank in the River Offin in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The river is said to have overflown following a heavy downpour recorded on Friday.

Seven people have been rescued so far, and six more people, including a 12-month-old baby, are missing.

A 60-year-old woman, who was among those rescued, is said to be in critical condition after she was rushed to the Nkawie Government Hospital.

According to the Assembly Member for Nkrumah-Betinko Electoral Area, Martin Prempeh, the victims, who are mainly farmers, were using the boat to the other side of the river when it capsized drowning all 13 people on baord.

“They were crossing the river to the other end to bring foodstuffs from their farm and the boat got sink. They were 13 on the boat and they were able to rescue 7 people,” he told 3News Saturday.

Authorities are still searching for the remaining 6 people trapped in the river.

The deceased has been identified only as Ramatu who is said to be in her 50s.
