FDA moves to destroy 90,000 packets of fake abortion drugs
DKT International used thousands of pieces of unregistered abortion drugs to terminate pregnancies in the country

This follows revelations made by the FDA that DKT International imported and distributed hundreds of unapproved abortion pills.

The FDA said it has the greenlight to destroy the packets of fake abortion drugs.
Head of Drug Enforcement Department at FDA, Thomas Amedzro, says although the Authority will do its best to prevent a recurrence of the incident, success will depend on support from the public and other stakeholders.
He said the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service has given them the chance to destroy the drugs after investigations.
Thomas Amedzro said "We need to write officially to the police for the release of the product so that they can also attend and watch the proper disposal of the product."
According to investigative piece by Accra-based Joy FM, it revealed that DKT International used unregistered drugs to terminate pregnancies at their facilities, exposing the women to severe medical complications.
It however, revealed how DKT International used thousands of pieces of unregistered abortion drugs to terminate pregnancies in the country.
The fake Misoprostol and Mifepristone pills have the potential to cause severe bleeding in women.

About 90,000 packets of the unapproved and unlabelled drugs were brought into the country by DKT International with the assistance of fake drug dealers from Nigeria and Switzerland.
The Food and Drugs Authority, on January 23, 2017 confirmed payment of a GH¢50,000 fine imposed on the Swiss national.

DKT International Country Director Kevin Hudson was recalled by head quarters in Washington DC following the report by Joy FM.
The report added that the FDA has completed internal processes for the destruction of the drugs.
