World’s first emergency clinic for male rape victims opens in Sweden
The world’s first hospital department specifically for male rape victims has opened in Sweden.

The new clinic is understood to be the first emergency department devoted solely to male rape victims.
Sweden has the highest rate of rape in Europe, and the hospital already operates a 24-hour, walk-in clinic for women and girls who have been sexually assaulted, treating between 600 to 700 patients a year.
Roughly 370 cases of sexual assault on males were reported in the country in 2014, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention.

"The general perception is that men cannot be raped," Dr Lotti Helstrom told Radio Sweden.
She said the subject of male rape was still "extremely taboo" but that it was much more common than most people realised.
She added that: 'Emergency medical care for raped men will be free of charge, and offered around the clock, all year,'
Dr Helstrom said that it was important for men to have equal access to emergency care.
A spokesperson for the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) welcomed the announcement.

Inger Bjorklund told The Local newspaper that a clinic focused on men would "contribute to the awareness of experiences of sexual abuse among men".
A politician from the opposition Liberal Party Rasmus Jonlund told The Local: ‘We are happy that we now can finally open the first rape clinic for men following the rape clinic for women..
‘It is the first in Sweden – we think it is the first in the world. We haven’t found another from our research on the world wide web.’
