Volta Regional Security Coordinator arrested over alleged smuggling

He was arrested on Monday at Tsito in the Ho West District of the Volta Region by a special unit of the National Security at the Flagstaff House.

The Volta Regional Coordinator of National Security, Appiah Fenteng, has been arrested for allegedly extorting monies from traders and helping them to smuggle goods from Togo into the country.

He was arrested on Monday at Tsito in the Ho West District of the Volta Region by a special unit of the National Security at the Flagstaff House while escorting a vehicle to Accra, with items that had not been taxed appropriately by authorities.

He is currently in cells at the Regional Police Headquarters, Accra-based Citi FM reports.

The suspect was said to have been sacked from the Ghana Police Service for his involvement in an alleged robbery.

He was later appointed at the beginning of the year to head the Region’s Security unit, with many wondering if he was fit for that job.

Some businessmen and women said that Mr Fenteng often asks them to alert him anytime they wanted to purchase goods, and ends up extorting various sums of money (of not less than 500 Ghana Cedis) from them any time they brought in goods from Togo.
