Creation of new districts: Konkombas continue to push for District Capital

This is in spite of the fact that the Legislative Instrument (LI) currently before parliament for the creation and elevation of some 38 districts in the country has proposed Yunyoo as capital for the new district in the area.

According to the group, their quest to have the capital sited at Namong is for purposes of development.

They argue that “69 out of the 80 communities making up the constituency if awarded the district capital would help foster the needed development and boost the economic activities in the area.”

Government, on Thursday November 16, 2017 laid before parliament an LI for the creation of some 38 districts across the country, with Yunyoo proposed as the capital for the new district in the Yunyoo Constituency.

But the Konkombas, who have always pushed to have the capital of the new district in one of their communities, are not giving up on their demand.

At a press conference jointly addressed by the konkomba chiefs in the Yunyoo Constituency, Konkomba Students Union (KONSU), Konkomba Development Association (KODA) and Konkomba Youth Association (KOYA), they appealed to the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene in the matter.

Making their case for the siting of the district capital, the group said Konkmobas occupy 69 out of the 80 communities in the constituency.

“We wish to state vividly with explicitness that about 90% of the Language spoken in the Yunyoo constituency is associated with the 69 communities which have a voter Population of 17,147out of the total voter population of 22,314 in the constituency, representing 76.84%.”

They argue further that the economic viability and the strategic location of the Konkomba communities make it even more prudent to have the district capital at Namong.

Meanwhile, the LI for the creation of the new districts will mature in 21 sittings days from the day it was laid.
