A cleaner who posed as a doctor and allegedly caused a woman to lose her pregnancy through the prescription of wrong medication has been arrested by the Odorkor police in Accra.

The suspect, Daniel Yartey, 37, popularly known as Dr Nartey by his neighbours at Achimota in Accra, is said to have been practising illegally for the past seven years.

Briefing the Daily Graphic in Accra Thursday, the Odorkor Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr Francis Aboagye Nyarko, said Nartey was arrested after a woman reported to the police that a fake doctor had given her an injection which had led to the loss of her pregnancy.

He said the police hunted for the said fake doctor for nearly a month after receiving the complaint.

The woman, he said, told the police that Nartey had introduced himself to the family of her boyfriend as a doctor at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in October 2015.

He said Nartey had also claimed he lived in the doctors’ flat at the hospital but investigations revealed he lived at James Town, near Achimota.

‘Suspect introduced himself as a doctor’

On November 20, 2015, Mr Nyarko said the victim, who was two months pregnant, felt feverish and her boyfriend called Nartey on phone for assistance.

Nartey is said to have rushed immediately to the victim’s house where he injected the woman and gave her some medicines to swallow.

However, reports said the woman started bleeding shortly after taking the medication and Nartey, who had then left was contacted again.

He said when Nartey arrived later he told the family that the earlier injection was for aborting pregnancies and so he would have to conduct a dilatation and curettage (D and C) on the woman to flush out the remaining foetus in the womb.

"The woman was very peeved and she reported the incident to the police but Nartey went into hiding and the police had been hunting for him until he was spotted at Odorkor and arrested."

Upon his arrest, Mr Nyarko said, Nartey confessed that he was not a medical officer but claimed he was a medical student at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Later, he said, Nartey claimed he had been a cleaner at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for six years and had learnt to practise medicine through his association with medical practitioners and had since been attending to sick people for a fee.

Mr Nyarko said Nartey has been charged with practising medicine without a licence.
