The General Secretary of National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called trainee nurses demanding the restoration of the nursing training allowance as insensitive.

The trainee nurses have been staging series of protest against the removal of their allowances, demanding that it is restored in full.

But the governing NDC says the allowances was preventing the nursing colleges from admitting to their full capacity.

On Thursday, the nurses staged a protest in Accra, calling on the government to pay allowances due them.

They also called on the government to employ graduate nurses who are still at home after two years of completing their training.

But the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia believes pushing the government to employ the unemployed nurses and also restoring the trainee allowances is a mark of insensitivity.

He said: "You are insisting that the money that should be used to build more hospitals where you can get more spaces to work should be diverted to employ you, what you are saying is that, you want to be concentrated in the few major hospitals. If you are 10 nurses to one patient; you don’t care so long as you take you salary."

He also accused the  leadership of the trainee nurses and midwives association of misleading the trainee nurses.

He said none of the leaders is a student and therefore when they continually lead the nurses to protest against the government over the cancellation of their allowances and the academic calendar is disrupted, they will not suffer.

Speaking on a local radio station in the Upper West Region, he said: “Those who are leading the trainee nurses association, none of them is a trainee nurse. They have finished school and when they do the demonstration to disrupt the classes, it doesn’t affect them. They have written their final exams already. They have the space to go round all the schools to cause agitation. When it leads to the closure of the schools, they are not affected."
