One person has been confirmed dead, with 13 others infected in the Upper West Region following the spread of Pneumococcal Meningitis in the area.

One dead in Upper West Region; 13 infected
The outbreak of the disease which began in December 2015 in the Tain District of the Brong Ahafo Region has claimed several lives.

Speaking to Accra-based Joy FM, Director of Ghana Health Service (GHS) of Nadowli-Kaleo District, Florence Angsomwini said in just a few weeks, the number of infected increased from four to 13.
"Some few weeks ago, we were having just four cases, and now, as at yesterday, we had 13 cases...They were all investigated and three became positive," she said.

Florence Angsomwini added that the deceased, who tested positive to the disease, had come to the district for a funeral, where she became unconscious and later died at the hospital.
The disease later spread to Wenchi, Techiman, Bruohan, Kintampo, and Sene districts all in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Bole in the Northern Region has also recorded some cases, with six having been confirmed dead in the Ashanti Region.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the disease has risen to 37, with one death being recorded in the Eastern region.
