The blood drive, mounted in partnership with the Ghana Red Cross and the Korle Bu Blood Bank, was held at the University College's campus in North Legon.

Acting Dean of the School of Nursing, Ms Angela Kwartemaa Acheampong, said: "This is an opportunity for our students to learn all about blood and blood donation. Our students were supporting the programme and also observing.

She added: “This exercise is also necessary as it is going to replenish some of the losses at the Korle Bu Blood Bank. Recently, they were complaining that they have a shortage and were interested in collaborating with us to replenish their stock."

Faculty, staff and students of Wisconsin were among those who donated.

In all, 60 pints of blood were collected for processing. It is said that one blood donation can save up to three lives.

Commending Wisconsin on the initiative, Mr Eric Asamoah Darko from the Ghana Red Cross said: “We advocate for people to donate at least once a year, if not every three months. Donating blood is very healthy for you and it also saves lives.

“Who knows who will need the blood? It could be your relative – that is why there is a need for us to put our hands together to make sure we have enough blood at the blood bank so that any time anybody needs it, the blood bank will not be short of blood to support and save lives.”

The blood drive comes just weeks after students donated blood as part of freshers' Akwaaba Week.

Wisconsin’s School of Nursing intends to make the blood donation exercise a bi-annual event to help boost the nation’s blood banks. It is also part of the institution's corporate social responsibility programme,’Wisconsin in the Community’.
