NHIS to be redesigned - Mahama

President Mahama has said that his administration has set up a team of technical experts to propose fundamental reforms that will revive the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Delivering the State of the Nation address, President Mahama said improvement made so far under the scheme requires it to be redesigned to meet the health needs of Ghanaians.

He said 2015 saw an active NHIS membership of 11.2 million, that is 41 per cent of the population.

Stakeholders in the health sector have complained that the NHIS is collapsing due to its several challenges, including the continuous and repeated failure to reimburse facilities on time, the incessant threats of service withdrawal by service providers, among others.

President Mahama has therefore indicated that the technical experts introduced are supposed to provide reforms on equity, premium, claims, fraud, as well as ensure availability of medications.

"Construction of the University hospital at Legon, upgrading of the Ridge Hospital is progressing," he said.
