CHRAJ meets 17-year old brutalised by soldiers

Lawyer for the Victim, Francis Xavier Sosu, said the Director of Investigations and a Principal Investigation Officer in the company of another Officer of CHRAJ met the victim who recounted his ordeal.

He said: ‘I'm happy to announce that CHRAJ is doing a great work with this case. Department of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection are also doing wonderful and I appreciate their work.

‘Yesterday the Director of Investigations and a Principal Investigation Officer in the company of another Officer of CHRAJ met the victim who recounted his ordeal.

‘Honestly it was a terrible narration with unimaginable stress and difficulty. The nearly three hours session began at around 2:20 and ended at 5:10pm,’ he said.

Bama was assaulted by soldiers in Tamale in the Northern Region for allegedly stealing a mobile phone belonging to one of the perpetrators of the assault.

He was hanged on a tree, had a gun pointed at him and beaten up in order to force a confession out of him. After the boy subsequently fell unconscious, the soldiers melted plastic bags on his back until he regained consciousness.

Lawyer Sosu, who is pushing for the soldiers to be punished, published chilling images of Bama in April.

The human rights lawyer visited the victim at the hospital and shared chilling pictures of the boy with multiple wounds he sustained at the hands of the soldiers.

The F-X Law & Associates petitioned CHRAJ on 25th April, 2016 for and on behalf of the victim for violation of his rights to personal dignity and rights against torture and dehumanizing treatment under Article 15 of our 1992 Constitution.

Sosu said giving the account of what he heard, he believes the soldiers who carried out the brutality should not remain in active service.

‘Giving the account I heard yesterday from the victim himself, I honestly don't think these Military men should ever remain in the service. Contrary to what the CDS said at his last press interaction these men deserve to be dismissed from the service,’ he said
