Victims make desperate calls for help 48 hours after pit collapse

Rescue workers at the Galamsey pit in which over 14 miners are reportedly trapped have expressed optimism that there are surviving victims in the pit.

According to some residents who are helping in rescue efforts, some of the trapped miners are responding to their calls and calling for help.

The miners were said to have been trapped since Sunday in a mine at Prestea-Nsutafollowing a heavy downpour.

The Nsuta District Police Commander, Superintendent Atsu Dzinaku who confirmed the incident to Accra-based Joy FM said that five of the miners managed to come out from the collapsed pit.

Rescue efforts are still underway to rescue those who are still trapped.

Two out of the five victims who escaped unhurt are currently under investigation.

The Prestea District Police Commander, Superintendent Atsu Dzineku said that the police had begun investigations into the incident.

“Whoever is found culpable will be dealt with. We have one Kojo Baah who is the owner of one of the pits. They have formed a joint association carrying that operation in the area. We are looking for them. They are on the wanted list. My Divisional Commander was here and some elders also came. We have asked that they produce them for interrogation”, he said.
