Minority refutes Muntaka's motion for resignation of Talensi MP

Robert Nachinab Doaneng has been enskinned as the paramount chief of Tongo.

Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, Majority Chief Whip has filed a motion demanding the resignation of Hon. Robert Nachinab Doaneng, Talensi MP’s since the MP has breached the laws in the 1992 constitution of Ghana.

He explained that the Talensi MP was enskinned as a chief of Tongo in the Upper East Region on April 29, 2015, who under the laws of Ghana cannot be a Member of Parliament simultaneously.

The minority leader, however, debunked the motion. He argued that Hon. Nachinab can be called a chief on condition that the Registrar General publishes one title in the gazette.

By article 276 of the constitution; “ (1) A chief shall not take part in active party politics; and any chief wishing to do so and seeking election to Parliament shall abdicate his stool or skin”.

Hon. Muntaka buttressed his point adding that the Talensi MP’s week absence confirms he is a Chief and according to the rules of parliament, a seat will be deemed vacant if an MP fails to attend parliament for 14 consecutive days.

He congratulated the MP and asked him to do the honourable thing by resigning which will add another seat to NDC after the  by-elections.

The Member Parliament for Talensi in the Upper East region on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Robert Nachinab Doaneng was enskinned as the paramount chief of Tongo.

The legislator succeeds the late Tongo-Raana Sapaalug-Namalteng Boara Yenga Kolbil. He once contested the skin in May 2007 but lost to the late chief. Read more

However, Doaneng has already declared his intention not to contest the seat, but has remained silent over his resignation since the Constitution bars chiefs from active politics.
