Armed soldiers and police in the Tatale Sanguli district of the Northern Region have tightened security to avert a possible ethnic clash between the Basari and the Konkombas tribes.

The move comes on the back of a demonstration by the Basari’s against the paramount chief and alleged threats to murder Konkombas if a DCE is appointed from their lineage.

The angry youth of Basari tribe are said to have threatened to harm the paramount chief, Obore Gariba Yankosor, if he tries to influence the nomination of the DCE in favour of the Kokombas.

Scores of Konkomba people are said to be fleeing Tatale to neighbouring Togo over fears that their lives will be in danger if the Basaris are able to carry out their threat.

The Divisional Police Commander ASP Eric Akobor has told Accra-based Joy FM that the police had to beef up security in the area following the withdrawal of members of the Konkomba community in the area.

He said he suspects that the tension may have risen due to political differences between the two ethnic groups.

The Commander said the police and military presence in Tatale is aimed at ensuring the safety of the people in the event of an outbreak of violence.
