Akufo-Addo's pick for Accra mayor to focus on sanitation

Mr Sowah said he will focus on generating power and money from waste, saying waste management has become a potential source of resource generation.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM after he was named as the 'Mayor' of Accra, he said: "One of the key issues confronting Accra which I am truly aware of is the issue of sanitation and waste management.

"In seeking waste management, today, waste is no longer considered as a waste but as a by-product of something else. So how do we recycle our waste. How are we using our waste so that the waste become a source of power or cash [for] us."

Touching on the activities of hawkers, the Mr Sowah noted that alternatives ways would be used to move them away from the street.

He ruled out the use of force, describing it as "crude and tough tactics."

“Over the years, we have used crude and tough tactics to remove hawkers from the street. It has not been effective. It has not been working. I think that there is the need to engage every trader… I am not going to employ the use of crude tactics by caning people,” he said.

“We should be thinking of alternative ways of engaging the traders so that we also understand and appreciate the fact that being on the street is not the best way,” he added.
