The primary became necessary after the party's parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Anthony Osei Gyimah resigned. Even though he cited personal reasons in his letter to the regional executives, he later blamed the leadership of the party for his resignation.

Anthony Osei Gyimah said, "it all stems from the fact that after the declaration of the primary results, last year in November, I started getting some negative sentiments whereby they were creating some divisions in the constituency within the NDC."

The party opened nominations for three days (from Wednesday, July 20 to Friday, July 22). According to the Deputy Regional Secretary Francis Annor-Dompreh even though three people picked the nominations form one did not file by the deadline. “Three people picked nomination forms but at the close of nominations, only two were able to file successfully. They are Ambassador Emmanuel Victor Smith and Dr Peter Ashirifi MCE of the area”.

Annor-Dompreh said vetting for the two contenders would take place on Wednesday, July 27.

“By Wednesday, July 27, we will vet the two candidates at least for them to go through the normal process. After the vetting, the election date will be determined by both the national and regional executives who will be supervising the vetting exercise.”

Annor-Dompreh indicated that they would ensure the re-run is done smoothly devoid of any issues.

There have been concerns raised about the effect of the late re-run on the party in the constituency but Annor-Dompreh disputed that saying “we are very well prepared and ready for the election. We will win the seat even at the short interval we have to campaign for whoever emerges the winner.”

He argued that both candidates who filed their nominations are well known in the constituency, therefore, making it simpler to campaign for the winner after the re-run.
