Akufo-Addo commends peaceful handing over; calls on Weah to create more jobs

President Akufo-Addo has lauded Liberia following the successful swearing in of George Oppong Weah as President on Monday.

Mr. Weah was sworn in as Liberia President on Monday, January 22, 2018, following his victory in the general elections held last year.

A host of African Heads of State made it to the SamuelKanyon Doe Sports Complex, in Monrovia, to witness the swearing-in of the 51-year-old ex-footballer.

Among them was Ghana President, Akufo-Addo, who has commended the West African nation following a successful handing over and swearing in ceremony.

Addressing the media, he described the step taken by Liberia as “an extremely important development in Liberian history, and in West African history”.

According to him, “the democratic consolidation that so many of us are seeking is taking place, and, that democracy is gradually being entrenched stronger and stronger in the body politic of our different states”.

President Akufo-Addo further urged Mr. Weah to help create more jobs in the country, whiles commending the efforts of outgone Liberia president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

He challenged the new Liberia president to build on the legacy of his predecessor, insisting growing the Liberian economy should be priority.

“President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was preoccupied with establishing the basic things after the civil war. She’s been able to that. Now it is a question of building on them to grow the Liberian economy, so that all of these young people who voted for him, who are out of work, can find work to do in the very near future,” he said.

Other presidents present at the swearing-in ceremony were Allasane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire; Togolese President; Faure Gnassingbe, President of Niger; Mahamadou Issoufou, Senegalese President; Macky Sall, Guinean President; Alpha Conde, and the President of Mali; Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Also, ex-Ghana presidents, John Dramani Mahama and Jerry John Rawlings graced Mr. Weah’s swearing-in ceremony.
