Government will not lay off workers in 2017 – Seth Terkper

“That is a lie if I may use that word I normally do not use.”

Minister of Finance Seth Terkper has accused Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of trivializing issues on the economy in the NPP’s response to the 2016 budget presented by government in November.

He categorically denied the claim by Dr. Bawumia that government will lay off workers after the 2016 elections a clause contained in the IMF    bail out terms.

Mr. Bawumia in his two hour address said government must come clean on the agreement reached with IMF to lay off workers in 2017.

“That is a lie if I may you use that word I normally do not use.”  Terkpe said on Joy Fm in response to Dr. Bawumia’s claim.

He said the memorandum of the economic and financial policy is on the IMF website.

He explained that the rationalization of size of the civil service simple means ensuring efficiency.

“Rationalize size simply means that you are going to look across the public service, the first step is you are going to do an establishment ...eg how many presenters do you need and how many producers do you need if it is five and you have six if you rationalize you move the one possibly two to the production through pining and other things what applies to the private sector must apply to government.” He said.

He said rationalization policy in the public service has already begun, denying the claims by Dr. Bawumia that it will take place in 2017.

“We are implementing it with respect to all employees on the public sector payroll as a result of the payroll upgrade we are putting a human resource management system in place that will link the HR for those who are currently on the payroll." The Finance minister said.
