Nii Armah Akomfrah to take legal action over his suspension

The Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP) on June 30, 2016, suspended its General Secretary, Nii Akomfrah and National Youth Organiser, Ernesto Yeboah following the controversy surrounding the Ford vehicle gift offered President John Mahama by a Burkinabe contractor.

According to him, the suspension came to him as a surprise as the party is yet to state clear reasons for the action.

“This is a serious issue which required serious reflection; I’ve reflected seriously on it and I have awaited my formal notification and I’ve seen a letter of suspension today. It’s a simple letter and I have passed it on to my lawyers so that I can take serious legal action on it. I will be responding on a strictest legal terms to the party,” he told Accra-based Kasapa FM.

He added: “I have received a letter which doesn’t give me any reasons for my suspension and so I will right back to the party, it will be a legal letter to the party. I was flabbergasted that it hasn’t laid out a clear basis for my suspension and I’m also surprised that we have taken such a course given that hundreds of people comment for political parties and they don’t need to call their Central Committee, or go to Conference or congress before they speak for their party, there are remedies for parties every single day. So I’m hopeful that we can resolve this issue quickly otherwise we’ll have a very deformed party going into the election.”

Akomfrah and Ernesto Yeboah had openly criticised the flag bearer of the party, Ivor Greenstreet after he said there was nothing wrong with Mahama’s decision to accept the car gift from the said contractor.

They subsequently petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice over the matter, arguing that the president disregarded the guidelines on conflict of interest in accepting the vehicle gift.

The Disciplinary Committee of the party has however given the two the opportunity to defend themselves.

The party has since appointed the deputy General Secretary in charge of Administration, Asani Tano as the acting General Secretary of the party.

A statement signed by the National Chairman of the party, Prof Edmund N. Delle said Nabila Basiru, the deputy Youth Organiser has also been appointed as Youth Organiser.
