The 40-day exercise started on Wednesday, August 17.

The proxy voting process will enable an eligible voter delegate someone to vote on his or her behalf because he or she will be unavailable during the Presidential and Parliamentary polls.

Earlier the EC stated that it had put in place enough measures to ensure that proxy voting is not abused in the upcoming December polls.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Director of the EC John Appiah Baffoe explained that electorates cannot just pick application forms to vote on behalf of another by proxy.

He said, “It is not correct that once you pick the application form and fill it for submission, then you are eligible for proxy voting.”

“This is necessary because, on Election Day, the proxy must also be verified before he would be allowed to vote. If all these technical details are not provided, the application will not be accepted by the commission,” he added.

He indicated that the proxy must also be a registered voter. But he was quick to add that either the proxy or the applicant can pick the form.

He said both people needed to be present for a verification process which will see the ten fingerprints of the proxy entered to those of the applicant.

Pressure group, “Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA)” earlier expressed worry about what it calls the lack of transparency and the absence of a clearly defined process for the submission of the proxy application.
